Although I have an eclectic taste in music, I am quite particular about what I really like in life. One of the genres I found that dates pretty quickly is Electronic music. I find that most songs I have enjoyed in the 90’s are quite insufferable today. Clearly this change in taste is a combination of the shelf-life of a specific piece of music and one’s own rate of emotional maturation, but I believe listening to old Electronic music is tantamount to watching old Science Fiction movies- very few become classics (That silicon-based alien is obviously a guy under a rug scurrying around like some drunk).
Ironically, one of my favourite arrangements of all time – so far – comes from this genre which I’ve discovered on one holiday at quite a young age while listening to a friend’s soundtrack CD of the 1995 film “Hackers“. Some years later I decided to buy the CD purely for this track. For me, favouritism of music implies an emotional connotation and/or response that can remind you of past experience when those emotions were felt or create new experiences and memories. “Halcyon & On & On” [sample] by Orbital is a timeless piece of music, in my opinion, and even after all this time I can still play it to death in any mood at any moment. Saying that I love this song would be an accurate expression. Its effects on me are always soothing and I find that it inspires a semi-dream state. Of course it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but enjoying music is a personal journey. One of my greatest wishes is to be able to share my entire experience – imagination, thoughts, emotions and perceptions – with someone close while being whisked away to my version of Neverland at the seat of my soul. This song is one of the few things that can get me there, but unfortunately I don’t think I’ll ever be able to take someone along for the ride. I’ll still try, though.

Indeed, I wonder how many people still consider this a favourite and how Orbital feels about the response to this song.
